The procedure for the calculation of thermal cycles, microstructure and mechanical properties of metal at the heat affected zone (HAZ) in hybrid laser-arc welding of steels is proposed. It is based on function-analytical solution of the 3D direct heat conduction problem and on numerical solution of the inverse problem with consideration for real weld shape. An example of how to predict microstructure and mechanical properties of the carbon steel at the HAZ is given. A satisfactory agreement between the calculated and experimental hardness distributions is observed.

Study of the welding filler wire with the nanocomposite Ni-based matrix coatings and the dispersed phase of the halide salts and oxides is presented. During arc welding in argon and carbon dioxide, nanocomposite coating significantly improves the metal transfer, the heat transfer to the base metal and arc stability. The use of Ni-based nanocomposite filler wires in argon and carbon dioxide leads to increase of the welding current and reduce of arc voltage.

Expert systems are considered to assess the influence of the conditions and technological process parameters on the properties and quality of the plasma surfacing. The given ranking of the characteristics and parameters may be taken as preliminary or concomitant while organization of the experiments aimed at optimization of exact characteristics of the deposed coatings and at describing the connections between the optimization characteristics and the technological parameters.

The technique for calculating 3D temperature field in butt fusion welding with consideration for prescribed thermal features was developed. It is based on solution of the inverse heat conduction problem. An example of reconstruction of the temperature field in butt tungsten arc welding of heat resisting steel was demonstrated.

In the article there is considered influence of the thermocapillary forces on melt flow in the melt pool and there are analyzed conditions of the melt pool surface stability. Also there are fulfilled investigations of the humps structure appearing during the non-vacuum electron beam welding. The results show that the Marangony effect is the main process determining the melt pool dynamics and the temperature gradient of the surface tension coefficient is the determinative factor.

A vacuum method for determination of diffusible hydrogen content determination in deposited weld metal is presented.  The optimal specimen dimensions to minimize the hydrogen loss before measurement and reduce the time of measurement were found. An comparison between experimental and calculation results of hydrogen content determination using the specimen with standard dimensions of 100×25×8 mm and the specimen with proposed dimensions of  35×15×8 mm is given. The calculation method for rapid determination of diffusible hydrogen content is proposed. The device for hydrogen determination in deposited weld metal was developed.

Experimental investigation results of possibility to produce cladding of long low alloy heat treatable bronze buses with moly foil by means of resistance brazing are considered. AC and DC resistance machines of high power were used in experiments. Ten compositions of self fluxing brazing filler alloys of copper (six compositions) and nickel (four compositions) were investigated. Optimal brazing conditions and filler alloy compositions were defined. Macro and micro structural investigations and mechanical testing of brazed samples were performed. Some recommendations about using of brazing of such structures are formulated.

Study of new flux-cored wires and welded joints during GMA underwater welding of steels in the aquatic environment is presented. Application of flux-cored wires with a high content of fluoride made it possible to improve gas and slag shielding of the weld pool, to increase the intensity of metallurgical reactions of hydrogen fixation in the gas phase. It provided the increase in the density of deposited metal, improvement of mechanical properties weld metal, metal transfer, reducing the arc voltage and increasing the welding current.

Study of formation and properties of welded joints of steel 10KhSND obtained using the welding filler wires with nanocomposite coatings based on Cu-, Ni-matrix and the dispersed phase of fluoride salts and oxides is presented. During the MIG/MAG-welding these materials leads to reduce the width of beads and increase the depth of penetration. During welding of 10KhSND steel Cu-, Ni-matrix coated wire increased tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of welds, and the wire coated with Ni-matrix increased weld toughness by 5–9%.
